Alopecia Universalis is a rare autoimmune condition that causes complete or near-complete hair loss on the scalp, face, and body. I was diagnosed with this condition six years ago, in early 2018, starting with random bald spots on my scalp. I kept it hidden from the public for as long as possible. Treatments helped bring some hair back, but after my single release, Look Away, the condition escalated to 100%, and I began losing hair in patches until I eventually lost every hair on my body. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I just went through that really deep process of pain and acceptance. I lost that thing I liked and will no longer have. At one point, I was completely hairless. Since then, my hair has shown some regrowth, but it’s mostly fine, almost transparent baby hair. I have no control over the progression. It took me three years to fully come to terms with this reality; though I still have tough days, I’ve truly embraced it, along with the possibility of healing. Currently, I’m not using any treatments or products. Instead, I’m focused on meditative practices to replace old stress-driven behaviors and coping mechanisms with more sustainable ones. Essentially, I’m letting go and allowing the condition to take its course. For anyone with alopecia, please know that not all types progress to universalis, as mine did. You can find more information on alopecia and treatment options below.
